With over 40 countries making up this sprawling continent, it’s no wonder that Europe has plenty to offer. From cosmopolitan cities to stunning open landscapes, there’s something different to see around every corner, with the long history and rich culture of each unique country drawing millions of travellers from all around the globe every year.

If your idea of a perfect holiday involves spending time in the great outdoors, then you’re in for a treat.

There’s plenty of natural wonders to marvel at, and no matter how many times you visit, you’ll be able to find something new to captivate your senses. If you’re looking for inspiration, then read on to find out where to go to see natural European landscapes at their very best.

Vikos Gorge

Mainland Greece has a reputation for statues, good food and ancient temples – but that’s not all it’s got to offer. The landscape here has been shaped over millions of years, and is full of unspoilt beauty that will make it easy for you to picture yourself as a character in the myths and legends of Ancient Greece.

Keen hikers will relish a chance to explore on foot, soaking up the sights and feeling of fresh air as they traverse through spots such as the famous Vikos Gorge, which is the deepest in the world, with walls that are nearly 3,000ft high. As well as enjoying the scenery, you’ll be able to look out for plenty of natural flora and fauna that relies on this magnificent landscape to survive.

Iceland’s glacier ice caves

If you’re not afraid to go somewhere a bit unusual, then Iceland should definitely be on your holiday itinerary. A far cry from sun-soaked beaches or busy cities, this country offers abundant natural beauty in its most raw form.

Home to glaciers, geothermal hot spots and black sand beaches, the whole island is a natural wonder in itself.

But for a truly unique experience, take a guided tour into one of Iceland’s glacier caves. Formed entirely of ice that is often a vivid blue colour, these otherworldly spaces are some of the most breathtaking locations in Europe. Plus, because they’re seasonal (they melt each summer), they’re always changing. You might have seen one on social media, but it’s not the same as the one you’ll personally experience.

Dune of Pilat

Europe’s tallest natural sand dune is a worthy addition to this list of natural wonders. An hour’s drive south of Bordeaux, this hill creates a natural, 100m-high barrier between the Atlantic Ocean and the pine forest, giving curious travellers an opportunity to enjoy the outstanding views. It’s also migratory: every year, it moves up to 16 ft further inland.

Once you’ve had your fill of the sights, head back down and take a refreshing dip in the cool water, before recharging by tucking into a delicious picnic.

Embrace the natural beauty of Europe

These three locations are truly just a small snapshot of the amazing natural wonders Europe has to offer.

No matter where you go and what season you visit in, you’re sure to find a destination that will stay in your heart forever.
