How to get to Brighton

Brighton is a famous seaside city on the south coast of England, attracting visitors worldwide. It is easily accessible by air, train, or car, making it a convenient and exciting destination for a weekend getaway.

Air: if you are travelling by air, the nearest airport to Brighton is London Gatwick Airport, about 30 minutes away by train. From the airport, you can take a train from the South Terminal station to Brighton, which frequently runs throughout the day.

Train: travelling by train is also a convenient option, with direct services available from London Victoria, London Bridge, and many other major cities in the UK. The journey from London, Victoria, takes around an hour, making it a popular day trip destination from the capital.

Car: if you prefer to drive, Brighton is easily accessible from the A23 and A27, with plenty of parking options in and around the city. However, it is worth noting that traffic in and around Brighton can be busy, particularly during peak holiday seasons, and car parking can be expensive.

How to get around Brighton

Getting around Brighton for a weekend is easy and convenient, with a range of transportation options to choose from.

Walking is the most popular and enjoyable way to explore the city, especially around the central area where most attractions are located. The city’s compact size makes it easy to walk from one place to another, and you’ll get to experience the charming streets and lively atmosphere up close.

If walking isn’t your preferred mode of transportation, you can rent a bike to get around. Brighton has a well-maintained network of cycling paths, making it a cyclist-friendly city.

Another popular way to get around Brighton is by bus. Brighton and Hove Bus Company operate the local bus system, which offers a range of ticket options, including day passes and mobile tickets. Frequent buses run throughout the city, making it easy to reach your destination. You must tap on and off with your card at your preferred stop. It is straightforward to use, and we found the bus drivers helpful!

Taxis are also readily available throughout the city, with various options, including traditional black cabs, private hire cabs, and ride-hailing apps.

Overall, getting around Brighton is easy and stress-free, with various transportation options to suit your needs and preferences.

When is the best time to go to Brighton?

The best time to visit Brighton depends on what you want to do and see. If you’re looking for warm weather and beach activities, the best time to go is during the summer months of June to August, when temperatures are generally in the mid-20s. This is also peak tourist season, so expect crowds and higher prices for accommodation and activities.

If you’re interested in cultural events, consider visiting during the Brighton Festival and Fringe in May, which features a wide range of music, theatre, dance, and visual arts performances. This is also an excellent time to see the city’s iconic landmarks, such as the Brighton Pavilion and the Brighton Palace Pier, as the weather is usually mild and sunny.

For those who want to avoid the crowds and enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of March to May or September to November. The weather may be chillier, but the city is still bustling with activities and events, and often fewer tourists are around.

Finally, if you’re a fan of the festive season, Brighton is a great place to be during the winter months of December to February. The city is beautifully decorated with lights and decorations. Plenty of seasonal events and activities, such as the Burning of the Clocks celebration on December 21st and the Brighton Christmas Market. Just be prepared for cooler temperatures and possibly some rain.

Overall, Brighton has something to offer year-round, so choose the time that best suits your interests and preferences!

Weekend in Brighton Itinerary Day 1:

Morning:

Have fun at Brighton Pier.

Start your day at the iconic Brighton Pier, one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Head to the narrow, winding streets of The Lanes for some shopping and browsing. This historic area is filled with independent shops, boutiques, vintage stores, and plenty of cafes and restaurants to stop at for a bite to eat.

We especially loved walking along North Laine and then heading up to see the Banky painting of the two police officers kissing, which was nearby.

You should also head to many of the beautiful cafes that Brighton has to offer. There are so many you are spoilt for choice.

The Coal Shed

We enjoyed eating at The Coal Shed for dinner on our last visit to Brighton. The Coal Shed is the perfect restaurant for you if you’re a fan of delicious steaks and seafood. Open Market

You can go to the Open Market in the morning to start day two of your Brighton itinerary. This bustling indoor market is filled with stalls selling everything from fresh produce and baked goods to artisanal crafts and vintage clothing. Grab a bite from one of the many street food vendors or pick up some souvenirs to take home.

It is better and busier on the weekends rather than during the week!

Brighton Beach

Next, head to Brighton Beach for fun in the sun on your Brighton Itinerary. Whether you want to sunbathe, swim, or try watersports, there’s something for everyone on this iconic stretch of sand and sea. Also, is it raining? You will still find some locals on the beach…

You can always head past the pier towards Brighton Marina if you fancy a walk. You can stop off and play mini golf on the way, watch people playing basketball, or you can go in one go in the Beach Box Spa.

Also, if you don’t fancy walking back (we didn’t), a handy bus takes you right back to the centre of Brighton.

If you want to see Brighton and the sea views from above, you should take a trip on the Brighton i360 (former British Airways i360 – now owned by the council), a futuristic observation tower that offers stunning views of the city and the coastline.

From the top, you can see for miles in every direction, making it a perfect spot for photos. You can catch an incredible sunset from up there, or if not – there is a bar to drink at any way to have a fabulous weekend in Brighton.

6 Travel Tips for Visiting Brighton:

Check the weather

A weekend in Brighton can be unpredictable in terms of weather, so it’s always a good idea to check the forecast before your trip. Pack appropriate clothing for the season and bring an umbrella, just in case. You can check the weather here: BBC Brighton Weather.

Bring comfortable shoes

Brighton is a walking city, so comfortable shoes are necessary for exploring two days in Brighton. The city has many hills and uneven pavements, so wear shoes that will provide reasonable support and traction.

Use public transport

While walking is a great way to explore Brighton, public transport is also a convenient and affordable option for a weekend in Brighton itinerary. The city has a reliable bus service and train stations that connect to London and other cities.

Explore beyond the seafront.

While the seafront is a major attraction, there’s much more to see for a weekend in Brighton. Take the time to explore the Lanes, North Laine, and the city’s many parks and museums.

Try local food and drink.

Brighton has a vibrant food and drink scene, with plenty of independent cafes, restaurants, and bars. Be sure to try local specialities, such as fish and chips or a Brighton Gin and tonic, in your two days in Brighton.

Take advantage of free activities.

While there are plenty of paid attractions in the city, there are also many free things to do in Brighton. Stroll along the beach, visit the Royal Pavilion Gardens or explore some of the city’s many street art installations.

Where to stay for a weekend in Brighton

Brighton is a popular destination for travellers, and plenty of accommodation options are available to suit a range of budgets and preferences. Here are some of the top areas to consider for your weekend in Brighton itinerary:

Brighton City Centre: This is the most popular area to stay in, as it is close to all the major attractions, including the beach, the pier, and the Lanes. This area has plenty of hotels, hostels, and Airbnb rentals. We stayed at the Mercure because they had a great offer on Secret Escapes!

Hove: To the west of the city centre, Hove is a quieter and more residential area, with a good selection of hotels and guesthouses.

The Marina: If you’re looking for a more upmarket option, the Marina area offers luxury hotels, apartments, and plenty of shops and restaurants.
