Middle Black Clough Waterfall Walk Route Directions
Stage 1: From the Car Park to the Woodland
After parking your car, head left over the bridge and immediately crossed the stile. From here, you’ll find a well-defined footpath that runs parallel to the River Etherow.
Follow this path for about half a kilometre until you come to a bend where the trail curves through the woodland. Watch for beautiful cascades on your left as you walk through the woods.
Stage 2: From the Woodland across the stones
As you continue through the woodland, you’ll come to a part of the path where you’ll need to cross the river. There are some stepping stones to guide you across, but they can be challenging to navigate.
Many people find that wearing wellies is helpful in these situations. Take your time and find the best stones to ensure a safe crossing.
Stage 3: Across the Stones to Middle Black Clough Waterfall
Once you’ve crossed the river, you’ll need to follow the path up towards the waterfall. You’ll see the Near Black Clough Waterfall on your right as you make your way up the bank.
There are two ways to reach Middle Black Clough Waterfall – you can either continue next to the river or take the uphill track, which will then go down again and bring you to the waterfall. Both routes involve a bit of scrambling, but the views are well worth the effort.
You’ll be able to get very close to the waterfall and experience its power and beauty firsthand. You can also go to the top of the waterfall if you prefer or would like to see it from a different perspective.
Stage 4: Middle Black Clough Waterfall back to the Car Park
To get back to the car park from Middle Black Clough Waterfall, retrace your steps along the same path you took to reach the waterfall. As you make your way back through the woodland, you’ll come to the part of the path where you crossed the river earlier. Use the same stones to cross the river again safely.
Continue along the footpath next to the River Etherow until you reach the bend in the path. From there, the trail will curve and lead you back to the bridge you crossed when you first set out on your walk. Cross the bridge, and turn right to follow the path back to your car.
Keep an eye out for the beautiful views along the way and the other natural features, such as the Near Black Clough Waterfall. The return journey should take roughly the same amount of time as the walk to the waterfall.
