Surrounded by 53 volcanoes, Auckland is New Zealand’s busiest city and is mistakenly thought of as the capital. If you are on a budget, it can be difficult to decide what to do. But do not worry, there are a number of Free things to do in Auckland…

1. Explore Auckland Domain
Firstly, the Domain is Auckland’s oldest park and is centrally located in the CBD. Stretched over 75 hectares of land, it’s open 24 hours a day, 7 days of week and it’s perfect to escape the hectic streets of Auckland.
The main attractions include the Band Rotunda, Wintergardens and the duck ponds. Why not grab a morning coffee and watch the park goers chat and mingle in the peaceful environment?
2. Visit Viaduct Harbour
It’s always pleasant to be by the water and Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour is no different. Of course, it’s full of expensive restaurants and bars but what we enjoyed the most is revelling at the super yachts, whilst taking a stroll.
So what’s stopping you? Soak up the lively atmosphere and watch the world go by.
3. Ramble to the top of One Tree Hill
No, we are not talking about the hit American TV series. In Auckland, One Tree Hill is an impressive 182m volcanic peak. It’s named after the removal of the “one tree” and entices you with views across Auckland and its two harbours.
It is an important memorial for New Zealanders and Maori people and should be respected. You can combine your visit with the adjacent Cornwell Park (check out number 10).
4. Climb Mount Eden
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to visit an extinct volcano? Mount Eden is just a short journey out of the city centre and can be easily reached by bus or Uber. This is one of Auckland’s volcanoes which has an impressive 50m crater. Do you dare to look down?
As the city’s highest natural point, it is a fabulous photo opportunity of the skyline and only takes 20 minutes to walk to the top. To make your visit truly special, would be to visit Mt Eden for sunset, it is known to be the best sunset in Auckland and it should be high on your list of free things to do in Auckland.
5. Wander down Posonby Road
Get a feel for what it’s like to be a local and enjoy the inviting Posonby Road, just 10 minutes from the city centre. It’s full of a range of cafes, bars, galleries, boutique shops and high-end restaurants.
Take your time to enjoy this cool suburb, it’s the place to be and that means it’s the place to people watch. You might even spot some famous faces here.
6. Escape to Devonport
Furthermore, if you fancy a change from the big city, you can’t beat a trip to Devonport. It’s old style seaside charm and great street art is just a short 12-minute ferry ride from the CBD.
We recommend walking up the hill to Mt Victoria lookout to set sight on the skyline for unforgettable views. There is a vibrant café culture here, so it’s the perfect spot to have a well-deserved coffee break if you fancy one.
7. Enjoy a walking tour
Moreover, we are a firm believer that there is NO better way to see a city than through walking its streets and discovering hidden places.
If you are staying in a hostel, it’s likely they will offer a free walking tour. If they do, you should jump at the opportunity, because you’ll get an insider’s view of the city. These usually run from 10am and you will learn about Kiwi culture, history and some Maori words that you can teach your friends when you go home.
8 Marvel at Auckland’s Art Gallery, Toi o Tāmaki
Also, don’t forget to visit the world-class displays of local and international artists. Their works span across 4 floors right in the heart of the CBD. 9. Relax on Mission Bay
Mission Bay could not forgotten in our top 10 Free things to do in Auckland. This is a beautiful place to relax and unwind, with views of the impressive Rangitoto Island as a backdrop. Feel the sand in your toes and have a swim in the tempting water. Luckily, this haven is only 15 minutes by bus from the CBD. So put on your jandals and experience the nature.
10. Unwind in Cornwall Park
Finally, visit Cornwell Park, it’s open every day from 7am to 6pm and has been enjoyed by both locals and visitors for years. Ensure you explore its rich history and farmland. You will even be able to see some of New Zealand’s 60 million sheep, which are well-looked after by the farmers 365 days a year.You can use the park’s free BBQ facilities, bring your own picnic or just watch the birds.
