Visit New Zealand – 10 reasons to go

So many people flock to the other side of the world to visit the diverse islands of New Zealand.

There’s something about the spirit of New Zealand that makes me want to travel there over and over again (despite the long journey time). And I am not alone. There’s never a bad time to visit this country, just pack the appropriate clothes. The weather changes a lot. If you are thinking of taking a trip, make sure to check out our one month in New Zealand guide and our budget tips.

1. The locals are kind

Firstly, there are 4.5 million people living in New Zealand, better known as Kiwis, you might recognise them by hearing their unique slang like ‘jandals’ and ‘chilly bin’.

For instance, through my experience, Kiwis will go out of your way to make you feel welcome. Especially if you stay in Airbnb’s like we did. The hosts really went out of their way to help us, with tips, fresh tomatoes and even a lift to the airport.

2. You can have crazy adventures

Calling all thrill seekers to these great islands, there are so many activities to do!

Including: Jet boating, zipling, skydiving, bungee jumping, snow sports, biking, surfing are available and all whilst experiencing exhilarating views.  The list really could go on. If you want to try them all, then head to Queenstown, the place is swarming with adventurers like you.

3. They respect their indigenous people

In a nutshell, what’s great in New Zealand, isthere is a strong presence of the Maori people, you can learn about their history and they are a huge part of what makes New Zealand unique.

Also, you can discover their rich history in one of the country’s many museums or by visiting Rotorua.  Ensure you don’t miss out on a true cultural experience and appreciate the way New Zealand respects their people.

4. The scenery is like no other

Scenic drives are just one part of your trip when you visit New Zealand.

Additionally, you will find majestic mountains, beautiful lakes, geothermal vents, geysers, active volcanoes, deep glaciers and spectacular Fjords. A geographer’s dream.  There are so many natural delights on offer in this country. From the coast to the mountains, try and see as much variation as you can.

5. Wineries

Calling all wine lovers! I’m sure you’ve had the delight of a NZ wine before? There are so many vineyards in this great nation with scenic spots to relax and have a drink. The wine is world class and if you only have time to visit one place, check out Malborough , which has 75% of the country’s wine.

6. World class Walking

Seriously, New Zealand is heaven for hikers. There are so many incredible, famous walking trails. All are truly spectacular, showing just what it has to offer. The best part? They range in length and difficulty, so this is another example of how this country offers something for everyone.

Do you fancy hiking in the Fjords? What about the tropical coastline of Abel Tasman National Park? Hiking on Fox Glacier? The iconic Roy’s Peak? Or perhaps you want to hike to see the incredible Emerald Lakes in the Tongariro National park?

Moreover, you can do a hike every day if you want.  There’s nothing stopping you and there’s nothing comparable to the views you’ll discover…

7. Easy to travel

New Zealand is modest in size, especially if you’ve ever been to Australia. It comprises two main islands. The North and South. They are different in their own ways but both are absolutely beautiful.

The roads and connections in New Zealand, make it extremely easy to travel, whether you are planning on driving, going on a bus or even hitchhiking. Also there is the option to catch a ferry between the two islands, so you don’t need to catch a flight if you want to visit both of them.

8. Free/ cheap camping

After all, a budget trip is easier than you think. Get the Wiki Camps App and discover the free or cheap campsites available. You might have to drive a bit out of your way and sometimes there are limited spaces. Ensure you get there with plenty of time.

However, this can be the difference with making your New Zealand trip crazy expensive or crazy cheap. If you want to spend more on adventures, wine or food, remember cheap accommodation is out there and sometimes the camps are in the most beautiful spots.

Did you know there is a free camp at Lake Pukaki? Yes, Lake Pukaki, and the images below were our view. Crazy, right?

9. Experience an iconic film set

I’m sure lots of you want to visit New Zealand for a slice of Middle Earth. Of course the epic film trilogy was filmed here and you can really feel it as you travel the country.

What is sometimes forgotten is that you can experience the delights without going to the Movie Set. For example, Tongariro National Park should be considered a must if you want to check out Mount Doom. However, despite the cost and the amount of people, I still recommend going to Hobbiton. So who needs Hollywood when you can go to the Green Dragon Inn for a cheeky pint?

10. Safety

Finally, New Zealand is known for being progressive. Remember it was the first country to allow women to vote and have more equal opportunities. I never felt unsafe travelling this country and you can see this through the many hitchhikers on the roads.

Are you ready to head to visit the remote paradise that is New Zealand?
