How to visit the Scaleber Force Waterfall Walk in Settle

Scaleber Force waterfall (also known as Scaleber Foss and Scaleber Waterfall) is a secluded waterfall that falls into the River Ribble between Settle and Long Preston in North Yorkshire, England. Located along the South Craven Fault, the waterfall results from geological faulting.

Scaleber Force is on the South Craven Fault in the Yorkshire Dales. The water has eroded the imestone into a deep gorge. This has resulted in limestone boulder beds at the top of the falls. This waterfall is in Scaleber Wood, a 10-acre Woodland Trust site on Stockdale Beck. It’s a popular destination for walkers and bikers; one ride, the Settle Loop, passes Scaleber Force.

Locally, it’s part of the Settle Caves and Waterfalls Walk because of the Catrigg Force waterfall and various natural caves. Located at the bottom of the falls is a plunge pool, popular with photographers due to having a wonderful view of the cascades. It is one of the best things to do in Settle.

We believe it is worth a visit because not only can you see it from the bottom, but there is also a great view from the top of the waterfall near Scaleber Bridge. You can see the full force of the cascade from different perspectives. It is certainly one of the best things to do in Settle. The walk down is steep, slippery and muddy for some, especially after or during rainfall.

The route is well signposted, easy to follow and enjoyable. Our guide includes directions, car parking information, walk details, and frequently asked questions to help plan your day!

How to reach

Scaleber Force Waterfall is roughly 1.5 miles (2.4 km) southeast of Settle and 2.5 miles (4 km) north of Long Preston. You can walk from Settle Railway station if you are using public transport. This walk will take roughly 2 hours and be a walk uphill on the country roads.

You have to walk along Mitchell Lane, Lambert Lane and High Hill Lane, and once you reach Scalebar Bridge, you will see the start of the walk we describe below!

You can follow the Google Maps Directions here.

Scaleber Force Waterfall Parking

Unfortunately, there is no official parking for visiting the waterfall, so there are no facilities or toilets. However, it is not too far from the town of Settle, where you can park in a car park and walk up from there.

You will need to park respectfully on the grass verges on the side of the road. There is only room for 3-4 cars (at a squeeze) on the opposite side of the road to the waterfall. Please do not park in laybys, as this could slow down emergency vehicles and be dangerous. Also, remember that you should not park in front of farmyard gates, as this is unfair to the farmers doing their jobs.

Scaleber Force waterfall Walk Directions.

Although the walk is short, please take care down the steps and on the uneven ground!

  1. From High Hill Lane, climb over the stone stile and follow the public footpath to Scaleber Force waterfall.

2. You will walk down the woodland path, and you will almost immediately be able to see the falls from above. There is a bench at the top that you can sit on to enjoy the views.

3. Follow the path down, watching your step, as there are a lot of tree routes! There are also a lot of steps to go down, which become extremely slippery after rainfall.

4. Once you have finished exploring, you need to head back to where you started. Instead of going to the road straight away, if you turn right, you can walk near the top of the waterfall.

5. It’s wonderful to see it from above and below! It is not often you can easily wander to the top of a waterfall. After, return over the stile and head back to your car! Scalebar Force waterfall walk complete!

Top Tips

  • There are no facilities at the waterfall, but this is not a problem as it is so close to Settle.

  • You should also visit Malham Cove, Janet’s Foss and Gordale Scar, which are all nearby – as they are magical wonders.
  • Wear sturdy shoes (preferably walking boots) because this path can get very muddy!
  • Check the weather forecast before you go to plan accordingly. We always check the Met Office Settle and BBC Settle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I make the walk longer?

You can combine the Scalebar Force waterfall with the Catrigg Force waterfall and visit the many caves. You can also set off from Settle to complete the walk, rather than starting from just outside the stile.

Can I swim in the Scaleber Force Waterfall?

The pools are not very deep, but people have paddled and had a dip in these falls. Remember to take caution, as the water is very cold and judge it on your circumstances. If there has been heavy rainfall, you need to ensure that it is safe to enter the water, as the cascades can be extremely powerful.

When is the best time to visit?

Like most waterfalls, if you visit after heavy rainfall, you will be able to see, admire and photograph a powerful cascade. However, the path may be muddy and slippery at this time.

Alternatively, if you visit in the summer or there is dry weather, you can climb up to the second pool. Therefore, there are benefits to both!

How do I pronounce Scaleber Force?

Most locals pronounce Scaleber as Scally-ber, though Scale-ber can be heard too.
